About Odebunmi Olusegun Dokun (Hon.)

Odebunmi Olusegun Dokun, popularly known as Segun Odebunmi and also referred to as Bunvic, is a Nigerian politician from Oyo State who has had a long career in the House of Representatives. He is particularly associated with the Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency in the Ogbomoso political axis of Oyo State. His political career has spanned several terms in the National Assembly, making him one of the more experienced politicians from the constituency. His public career has largely focused on legislative representation, constituency development and participation in national policy discussions.

Odebunmi is a graduate with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. His educational qualification was recorded by the Independent National Electoral Commission among the credentials submitted for the 2023 House of Representatives election. His background in public affairs and political administration subsequently developed through his involvement in party politics and legislative service.

Odebunmi first entered the National Assembly in 2011, when he was elected to represent the Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He retained the seat in the 2015 election and became one of the PDP representatives from Oyo State during that period. His experience in the House gave him increasing visibility within the National Assembly and established him as a ranking legislator from the state.

In the course of his political career, Odebunmi moved from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ahead of the 2019 general election, he secured the APC ticket to contest the Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere seat. He subsequently won the election with 15,463 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Abiola Kamoru Alagbe of the Action Democratic Party. His 2019 victory marked another term in the House and continued his representation of the constituency under the APC.

During his time in the House, Odebunmi held important committee responsibilities. He served as Chairman of the House Committee on Information and National Orientation, a position that placed him at the centre of legislative activities involving public information, communication and the relationship between the National Assembly and the wider Nigerian public. He also participated in debates and legislative activities concerning infrastructure, economic development, employment, investment and public utilities.

His legislative record also includes raising issues affecting his constituency and other parts of Nigeria. In 2017, for example, he sponsored a motion calling attention to the persistent refusal of electricity distribution companies to connect certain towns and villages to the national grid. He has also spoken publicly about the responsibility of legislators to create an enabling environment for businesses, employment and economic development through appropriate legislation.

Odebunmi's political activities have also included participation in discussions about leadership within the House of Representatives. Following his re-election in 2019, he was identified as one of the experienced Oyo lawmakers whose names were being discussed by political stakeholders in connection with the speakership of the 9th National Assembly. Although he did not become Speaker, the episode reflected his status as a ranking member of the House at the time.

For the 2027 general election, Odebunmi's name has again appeared in connection with the Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere Federal Constituency. Oyo APC announced him among its House of Representatives candidates in September 2026, while earlier reports on the party's nomination process also listed him for the same constituency. However, the current final candidate record for the 2027 Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere contest lists Odebunmi Olusegun Dokun under the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) rather than APC. Because of this discrepancy between party announcements and the later final candidate record, his current party affiliation for the 2027 ballot should be treated with caution.

Odebunmi Olusegun Dokun's career therefore combines grassroots politics, party activity and extensive federal legislative experience. From his first election to the House in 2011 through subsequent re-elections and senior committee responsibilities, he has remained a prominent political figure associated with the Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere constituency. His record includes work on national policy issues, constituency representation and legislative oversight, while his renewed appearance in the 2027 electoral process places him once again in the political contest for representation of the constituency.
