Hon. Ali Lawan Shettima is a Nigerian politician and federal legislator from Yobe State. He is a returning member of the 10th National Assembly, having first entered the House in 2019 and secured re-election in 2023.

Ali Lawan Shettima was born on 15 January 1966. Parliamentary records list his highest educational qualification as the General Certificate of Education (GCE). Although detailed information about his early education and professional activities is limited in publicly available parliamentary profiles, his political career spans several decades and includes service at both the state and federal levels.

Shettima began his political career in the early 1990s when he was elected to the Yobe State House of Assembly under the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP). He served in the State House of Assembly from 1991 to 1993 and became the Majority Leader between 1992 and 1993. This early legislative experience established his involvement in public affairs and state-level lawmaking.

After his first period in the State House of Assembly, Shettima continued his political career within Yobe State. He served as Special Adviser on Political and Assembly Matters to Governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim from 1999 to 2007. He later became Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Geidam Local Government Area from 2007 to 2008. These appointments gave him experience in executive administration and local-government affairs.

Shettima subsequently held senior political responsibilities within the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), serving as its National Secretary between 2010 and 2011. He also served in the Yobe State executive branch as Commissioner of Works, Transport and Energy from 2011 to 2019. His time in the state government placed him in charge of portfolios connected with public infrastructure, transportation and energy-related responsibilities.

In the 2019 general election, Shettima moved into federal legislative politics by contesting for the Bursari/Geidam/Yunusari Federal Constituency under the APC. The Independent National Electoral Commission's 2019 result records show that he received 59,823 votes and was declared elected. His victory marked the beginning of his first term in the House of Representatives.

During the 9th National Assembly, Shettima held a leadership position as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs. He was also associated with the House's Care-Taker Committee during that period. His legislative responsibilities placed him in an important parliamentary role involving the House's public communication and related affairs.

Shettima was re-elected in the 2023 general election, allowing him to continue representing Bursari, Geidam and Yunusari in the 10th National Assembly. His current legislative profile records him as an APC member of the House of Representatives. During the 10th Assembly, he has sponsored legislation including the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act (Amendment) Bill, 2023. He has also sponsored motions concerning security, including the November 2023 terrorist attack on Geidam and attacks on high-tension electricity infrastructure in parts of Yobe and Borno States.

For the 2027 general election, Ali Lawan Shettima is listed as the APC candidate for the Bursari/Geidam/Yunusari Federal Constituency. The APC's candidate platform identifies him as its House of Representatives candidate for the constituency, while the final candidate information for the 2027 election also lists his name under the APC. His candidacy follows two consecutive terms in the House beginning with his initial election in 2019.

Overall, Hon. Ali Lawan Shettima has built a political career that spans state-level legislation, local-government administration, executive office and federal parliamentary service. From his election to the Yobe State House of Assembly in 1991, through his roles in the Yobe State Government, to his service in the House of Representatives since 2019, his career has involved several levels of public administration. As the 2027 election approaches, he remains the APC candidate seeking to continue representing Bursari/Geidam/Yunusari at the federal level.
